YES ORPHANS EDUCATION:

While great strides have been made in many parts of the world in ensuring that more youth have access to education, the stark fact remains that an estimated 125 million young people worldwide are not in school.  The loss of such a basic right is incalculable to those young people who are denied the opportunity to lead independent and productive lives and to their communities and nations as they fall even farther behind in the critical areas of economic and human development.

Education is development and a human rightIt creates choices and opportunities for people, reduces the burdens of poverty and diseases and gives a stronger voice in society.  For nations, it creates a dynamic workforce and well informed citizens able to compete globally, opening doors to economic and social prosperity".

Lack of educational and extracurricular opportunities denies the orphans youths the opportunity to develop leadership skills which they can use to guide their communities into the future. By being trained in non-formal education and formal education, helps the orphans youth can become peer educators who can spread awareness of salient social issues.

Nothing liberates and empowers orphan youths quite like education because its gives them the power to make a difference in their lives.

Educated and trained orphan youths will in turn pass the knowledge and skill to other community youth peers.

Youths who are educated are less likely to get HIV/AIDS and in Africa which has such a pandemic, we have to begin to change the pandemic.

Youth Education Support (YES) Programme

The focus of the YES programme is to link orphan youths in Africa with Friends in a support friendship relationship.

This outreach, the first of its kind in the history of adult scout leaders, mobilizes friends to be actively involved in orphans youth support in Africa.  Such friends are provided with the orphans youth education needs and in return they undertake to support them financially, materially, technically or morally.

YES Friends visit Africa and spend time with the supported orphan youths, getting to know the community people and building friendships that becomes the basis of the future support and interaction between the support friends and the orphan youths.

YES programme provides the orphan youths with the urgently needed support services in form of education to make a positive impact in their lives.

YES Approach:

YES Support Programme exists between the youth, guardians, friends, communities and the respective Government concerned.

YES Scouts reaches out to their peer orphan youths who are recruited and supported to join one of the community or school based  YES Orphan Patrols.  Divisional-wide Patrols are registered as YES Groups through the Government (Social Service Department).

YES Orphan Patrols are prepared and  introduced to existing youth scouts and absorbed as YES Scouts Patrols where they are further trained and invested as Scouts of the World (SW). Where there is no existing youth scouts, YES Scouts Patrols are registered together as YES Scout Groups under the existing National Scouts Association.

Orphan Youths Case History:

The case history of the orphan youths and their progress reports are placed on individual web pages for selection by prospective support friends.  These web pages holds information such us the photograph of the orphan youths, name, age, family size, living conditions and schooling information.  This information which is confidential by nature is only privileged for access by prospective support friends.

YES Support Friends:

YES Support Friends regularly organise adventure tours in Africa and undertake voluntary support services and other youth exchange activities in the country.

When a orphan youths case is identified, s/he is introduced to the YES Friends who may be interested to say YES.

Orphan Youth Benefits:

YES Friends selects one, two, three... or a group of the orphan youths who are then placed under their care to provide finance, material, technical or moral support.  This form of support enables the orphan youths to access basic education in communities and Government based schools and gain knowledge that further helps them realize their full potential.

Supported orphan youths are placed in community or government based schools where they are able to access secondary education.

YES Programme provides support in form of school fees, uniforms, blankets, bed-sheets, towel, shoes, socks, school bag, school box, playing ball, reading books or writing materials.

Through YES Programme which last for several years (programme), YES responds to the actual needs of the orphan youths in communities.  However, in order for the relationship to be productive, the YES Scout Groups are based on a partnership concept.  This approach allows the orphan youths through YES Scout Groups to respond to other community based development priorities while doing scoutingYES Scout Groups also contributes greatly to reaching the aims of YES Programme.

The above provision helps the orphan youths to receive the physical, cognitive and emotional care necessary to be connected to their past and be prepared for their future.

Through the acquisition of knowledge, skills and  positive attitudes, YES supports the preparation of the orphan youths for active involvement in community development through voluntary services.  Each YES Group project is enriched in this way.

Cost of Sponsorship:

To provide for all these facilities for one orphan youth it costs GB₤ 20 per month, but even  GB₤ 1, 2, 3 or more goes a long way in supporting YES Programme.
