YES Orphan Scouts ... Being Prepared to make a Positive Differences in KenyaYES Scouts Group is a Scouts Outreach commitment to making sure that all orphans youths have an opportunity to join Scouting, regardless of their circumstances, neighborhood or ethnic background.
Purpose:
YES Scouts Group purpose is to contribute to the development
of the orphan youths in achieving
their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential
as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their
local, national and international communities.
Mission:
YES Scouts Group mission is to provide an enjoyable and attractive
scheme of education and training aimed at encouraging the orphans physical, mental, social, spiritual and character development.
Objective:
YES Scouts Group objective is to give the orphan scouts an open platform to share experiences and ideas on how they can best be equipped to actively participate in the decision making process in their Patrols, Troops and Groups and eventually take up active leadership roles in societies.
YES Scouts Group address various issues of the world today and how they can be involved. They explore challenges facing them in seeking leadership positions in their Patrols, Troops and Groups, issues facing the society and how they can participate in finding solutions to such issues ranging from education, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, environment, sustainable development, peace education among others.
YES Scouts Group provides a sustainable and powerful infrastructure to promote YES Project policy, programme and action for youth education, training and research.

YES Scouts Group is in practice an active orphan scouts programme based on the scouting principles and method which places great importance on the patrol system

YES Scouts Patrol:
When an orphan youth becomes member of YES s/ he joins a small group called YES Scouts Patrol which has between four to eight members.
The Patrol System was defined by the Founder, Baden-Powell, as the method to be used in Units to train youths self-government and leadership. This is of capital importance in order to train the youths the Scout way. In fact B-P himself noted that "the Patrol System is the one essential feature in which Scout training differs from that of other organisations"
These Patrols reach out to other youths between age 6 and 35 years and combine to form YES (Scouts) Group.
YES Patrols are self-governed, led by Patrol Leaders and Assistants called the Patrol Seconds. Many activities are carried out in Patrols and organised by Patrols. The Patrol System encourages;

• teamwork
• responsibility
• peer support
• learning
• co-operation
• fun and friendship
• education support
Strategic Objectives:
To achieve its mission, the group is implementing a progressive education and training scheme
geared to suit the orphans scouts wide range of age, experience and ability.
Various skills based education
and training are
provided i.e.
* scouting skills training
* life skills education
* reproductive health including sexual, HIV/AIDS and peer
education
* psychosocial (spiritual) support
* formal and informal education
Education and Training
Activities:
Education and training activities are about involvement and
aim to encourage responsibility, self-reliance, the acquisition
of special life skills and an appreciation of the world in which
they live. The importance of team work is emphasised in games
which are cooperative rather than competitive.
The list of activities is endless - training camps, climbing,
hiking, poems, cooking, expeditions, photography, sports, cycling,
music, acting, crafts, computer games, IT skills etc.
Community
Service:
Involvement with the community is a very
important part of the group and all orphans scouts take part
in activities such as fund-raising for education, conservation
projects, litter clearance and giving practical help to the
elderly, the handicapped and the needy.
Main Target Audience:
YES Scouts Group targets to work with youths in the following age categories;
• Orphan Scouts Cubs - Age 06-11
• Orphan Scouts Juniors - Age 12-15
• Orphan Scouts Explorers - Age 15-18
• Youth Scouts Network - Age 18-25
• YES Scouts Friends - Over 18
YES Scouts Group also targets to work with the following;
Secondary Target Audience:
• Scouts Leaders - Over 25
• Guardians - Over 18
Locally, one or more of these Sections in age 06-18 combine to form orphans scout groups while those in age 18-25 years register as networks engaged in activities supportive to young people development. Young people networks are also engaged in exchange programme, visiting other countries in exchange.
Members, guardians and other supporters of the group often take on the administrative and ‘business’ aspects of running the group.
YES Scout Patrols:
The group has established youth patrols in communities which are
open to all assessed youths in the community.
YES Peer Patrol Leaders:
The patrols are under the leadership of trained Patrol
Leaders (PLs).
YES Orphans Scout Group has something to offer each orphan scouts, ranging from action, discovery, caring, sharing, fun and friendship - the group has it all.
With about 50 orphan scouts, the group is one of the greatest and most progressive group in Dagoretti Area experiencing the fun, friendship and excitement of being in the group.
